Once a year for most Central Virginia beds, typically in spring. Hardwood mulch breaks down (that is part of how it feeds your soil), so an annual top-up keeps the color rich and the weed suppression working.
A good rule: one cubic yard covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. But you do not need to do the math. We measure your beds during the free estimate and quote the exact amount, delivered and installed.
Both work well. Natural hardwood weathers to a soft gray-brown; dyed brown or black holds its color longer for a more manicured look. We use quality mulch either way, never the floaty shredded-pallet stuff.
Installed at proper depth over a cleaned bed, yes. It blocks the sunlight most weed seeds need. It will not stop 100% forever, but it dramatically reduces weeding, and pairing it with our seasonal bed maintenance keeps beds clean year-round.
